A brief review for Thomas Nelson Publishers Book Review Bloggers
Billy (William Paul McKay and Ken Abraham) tells the story of Billy Graham’s early years—from growing up on a North Carolina dairy farm, to marrying Ruth and entering the ministry, to battling a crisis of friendship and faith. When Billy’s friend and fellow evangelist Charles Templeton began to question his belief in God, Billy also had to wrestle with the truth. Was God truly who He said He was? Would His word prove true?
Billy is based off the movie of the same name, which gives its dialogue a script-like feel. In addition, Billy alternates rather abruptly between present-day and flashback scenes. Yet, the story itself is compelling, and the Grahams, inspiring. I was touched by the faith of Billy Graham’s parents, who prayed for their son years before his “ministry” began. The Grahams’ marriage, too, was a truly beautiful love story, and an example to every Christian couple. Finally, I was encouraged by Billy Graham’s belief in God—and reminded that my doubts and questions aren’t too big for God. His word, as Graham discovered, proves true.
Two favorite quotes:
“If you are not willing to live your life for something greater than yourself, well, then life is not really worth living.”
“This one thing I do know: you will hear His voice again, and when you do, it will carry you for the rest of your life.”
